A Chat with an Actor Who’s Keeping it Real in Big D

I recently sat down to chat with actor/director Tina Parker. She’s been acting with Kitchen Dog Theater for about 20 years now, and she says it would take “a gallon of money” to get her to leave her beloved Big D. Dallas hasn’t got its national due in the arts world, according to Parker, and she’s dedicated to making that happen, one play at a time.

Here’s a link from the KERA Art&Seek website to my interview with Tina Parker; she’s starring now in Kitchen Dog’s Thinner Than Water.

It’s BBQ for a Cause, Ya’ll!

I love BBQ, so when I was asked to judge a competition, I jumped at the chance. AND it was a benefit for the Pediatric Burn Unit of the Shriners Hospital in Galveston. So, a win-win for everyone! Yay, BBQ!

Sometimes I See Musicals

I mostly write and post about food here, but sometimes I see musicals. Makes sense – my degree is in vocal performance, and I spent about 10 years living in NYC. For some of those years, I pursued a career in theater, and for many of them, I saw a lot of shows. So when my boss asked me if I wanted to do a story on WaterTower Theatre’s production of “Dogfight the Musical,” it really was a no-brainer for me. Hear the story here: http://tinyurl.com/kd5oa2w

Komali Kicks Off “Food & Art” with Artwork by Locals, Mexican Bites, and a Mezcal Tasting

Komali Mexican Restaurant on Cole Avenue has joined forces with Alchemy Arts and Alan Simmons Art and Design for a fiesta of the senses. The artwork of Brad Jensen, Sean McCune, Michael Mentler, and Yelizaveta Nersesova is on display in the restaurant and bar area, and Komali celebrated the collaboration with “Food & Art,” an event that introduced the artists and “paired” the artwork with Chef Abraham Salum’s cuisine and Mestizo Mezcal. I had a chat with a “backwards” artist, learned how to make some tasty drinkable art, and got a lesson in the difference between tequila and mezcal.
